Jae Hun Kim Taekwondo Institute was founded in 1974 by Grandmaster Jae Hun Kim in Boston, USA. Grandmaster Kim carries the tradition set by some of the most recognised Taekwondo masters in the world. He was especially fortunate to receive personal teachings from General Choi Hong Hi - the acknowledged founder of modern-day Taekwondo - and from Grandmaster Park Jung Tae, founder of the Global Tae Kwon Do Federation.
The story of our school began with Grandmaster Kim moving to Boston in 1971 to attend MIT. He started teaching Taekwondo at area universities, where his classes quickly filled with eager students as people took notice of Mr. Kim's unique teaching style. They instantly recognised
the value of Grandmaster Kim's approach, which combines an analytical approach acquired through his academic studies at Western universities, with special expertise developed in the East by Taekwondo masters.
When Grandmaster Kim's Taekwondo classes at the universities could no longer hold the burgeoning number of students coming to him from all over the Boston area, and with encouragement from General Choi who wanted Grandmaster Kim to establish an exemplary Taekwondo school in Boston for the world to see, Grandmaster Kim decided to open a Taekwondo school of his own, where his students could practice under his supervision day and night. Thus, the Jae Hun Kim Taekwondo Institute was born on July 15, 1974, on Brookline Avenue in Boston. The school has flourished at that location ever since, attracting Taekwondo students of all ages and backgrounds, from around the world. Over the course of 40 years, our Institute has become renowned worldwide for its systematic and intuitive method of instruction, coupled with the highest level of professionalism. Our Institute is mentioned frequently as a premier Taekwondo school in the world by various martial arts organisations. The school has been featured in numerous publications as a leader in the field. Our school was selected in 2009 as the top Taekwondo school in the world by Mookas Media, the world's largest martial arts media corporation, and we received the "2009 World School of the Year Award" from the same organization.
The Singapore Network was established in 2003 by Master Santos Rivas to bring Grandmaster Kim's unique brand of Taekwondo to Singapore. The International Network has since expanded to close to 30 schools in 8 countries (USA, Singapore, Korea, Ireland, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines).
Although recognized as a traditionalist, Mr. Kim views Taekwon-do as an art that must constantly evolve, requiring the dedication of practitioners to improve all of its facets.
We do not expend our precious time and effort on political matters, such as associations or federations. We devote ourselves solely to teaching and practicing the art of Taekwon-do. Anyone who shares with us the desire to become a good martial artist is welcome at our school, and can rest assured that there are no politics here.
We teach Taekwon-do as a complete system. This includes hand and foot blocks, punches, kicks, sweeps, joint locks, grappling and throws, as well as sport Taekwon-do (Olympic rules). Some students may choose to specialize in one or more of the specific areas, but the school will always provide classes on all aspects of Taekwon-do.
Any technique used by a martial artist must make good sense and be based upon sound physical principles. The practitioner must have a clear understanding of why each technique is done a certain way. Therefore, technical discussions with other students or instructors are encouraged in our school. This approach is quite unique among martial arts schools, and Mr. Kim’s own experience at Harvard and MIT may have attributed to instituting this approach at our school.
We want each of our members to view the dojang as his/her home as a martial artist. Every member is allowed unlimited access to the school and classes during our extensive school hours. It is important to us that our members feel they can stop in anytime, for any reason.
We believe and abide by these school tenets:
We strive to achieve a harmonious balance in ourselves. The purpose of our school is not to produce tough and dangerous people, but to provide the means by which students bring out the best in themselves both physically and mentally. We provide balanced development for our members.
We advocate contributing to making this world a better and safer place for humanity, not through vigilantism, but through ethical self-conduct. Our students are instilled with the importance of responsible behavior. As more people follow this path, the influence of ethical behavior will grow stronger.
Our dojang is a small international community in itself, with students from many nations and heritages. And yet, our love and practice of Taekwon-do have brought us together. When we treat each other as family in our dojang – regardless of gender, race, ethnic background, or religion – it allows us to do the same for others outside the school.
Mr Santos Rivas hails from the tiny Central American country of El Salvador but spent his formative youth as a student in Boston, USA. In 1994, he began his Taekwondo training at the J H Kim Taekwondo Institute, never expecting that the teachings he received from Grandmaster Kim would so fundamentally and completely
change his life.
Mr Rivas proved to be a talented and dedicated student, spending any free time when he was not working days and studying nights, training at the Taekwondo school. Within a few years, he earned his 1st dan black belt under Grandmaster Kim and soon started teaching at the school. He was also an accomplished competitor, having won major US national- and state-level competitions such as the US Cup and Massachusetts and New York State Championships.
Since the founding of the Singapore network in 2003, Mr Rivasʼ passion for teaching Taekwondo has grown stronger day by day, where his classes are renowned for their relevance, innovation and sound technical principles.
As Grandmaster Jae Hun Kimʼs top disciple and protege, he is responsible for the overall development of the J H Kim system in the Asia-Pacific region. Mr Rivas has taught Ambassadors, CEOs and many other influential people but he remains dedicated making sure each and every student receives the best possible Taekwondo education in Singapore and Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines!
Our Taekwon Tots Program is specifically designed to cater to children at this tender age with age-specific exercises, games and drills to complement each stage of development. Classes are small (with opitimal ratio of 5:1) to ensure each child receives individualized attention. With caring and supportive instructors as role models, your child's first exposure to Martial Arts training will generate positive results beyond the training hall.
Our T-Kids Program is for children between 5 to 10 years old. Classes are fun challenging and goal-oriented. At the JH Kim Taekwondo Philippines, martial arts training is more than kicking and punching and earning belts. The T-Kids approach is used to reinforce discipline, build confidence and teach children to maintain a positive attitude and achieve their goals.
Our Special Teenkwondo and Adult classes allow teens and adults to train together in a social environment that is enjoyable while providing structure and discipline for healthy expression.
